Welcome to our website!

The Poynting Physical Society (PPS) are the Physics society at the University of Birmingham, and host a variety of social and academic events year round. We are student-led, fiercely independent and over a century old!

Events

PPS run both social and academic events weekly throughout term time, including bar crawls, sober socials, careers events and quiz nights. We also host one-off events, such as the Spring Ball and our summer camping trip. For more information about what events PPS has to offer, click below.

Sports Teams

PPS offers two 11-a-side football teams and one netball team. They all play in the campus leagues, against other departments at the University. It’s a great way to stay active, and also have some light-hearted competition! With a relaxed atmosphere, people of all abilities are welcome to join. Learn more by clicking the links below.

About Us

PPS has a long and rich history, dating all the way back to the formation of the society as the Mason College Physical Society by Prof. John Henry Poynting in 1884. PPS is governed by The Constitution, which sets out the roles and responsibilities within the committee and how the society itself works.
